Just in case you happened to not be aware of it, [livejournal.com profile] onyxlynxx  is awesome.  She has been an angel during this cold/allergy extravaganza of a week.  Just this evening she brought home chicken tortilla soup with three little tubs of red chile sauce to go in it - now that will get the sinuses and lacrimal ducts moving. :P

Wishing my laptop played video.  K and her mom are watching a movie, and already the notices of power outages in Houston and emergency rescues on Bolivar peninsula are coming in, hours before landfall.  And the internet idiots saying that anyone who couldn't or didn't evacuate should die and we shouldn't waste resources on them.

It's not that I think they should die. It's that they've dropped a great deal lower on my priority list.

There was free transportation, food, and housing available. It sucked, but it was free and available.

We'll send people in to look for survivors after the danger has become manageable again, I suppose.

It was only free in mandatory evacuation areas. You can't bring pets. People are people. Emergency workers are required to stay behind, and a lot of their families remain behind with them. The coast isn't exactly wealthy.

Do please be careful about engaging me on this one - my father is south of Houston right now, riding it out.

I was thinking of the guy interviewed in Galveston this morning, who was staying behind with his guns to protect his house. Or, god help me, this guy, who is staying behind so that he can be an "iReporter" during the storm.

He's on Galveston Island. That's the ocean you see behind him in that picture. I honest to god don't want anyone risking their life for him, though that is of course their decision.

I'm not trying to engage you on it. I honestly really only meant the people on the damned islands, who had people going door to door asking them to get in the cars and leave, and wouldn't.

For the people who *couldn't* leave, my attitude is very different. I know a lot of people with family in that area.

Where is south of Houston? I thought "south of Houston" was the Gulf of Mexico!

Also, there is never *quite* enough transportation, food or housing.

I am just glad that you are finally feeling better. You were pretty miserable there for a while.
